On September 17th, a conversation on the violence against Sami women was taking place at the Human Rights Film Festival in Umeå.

The common entry point for the conversation was the film ”The Silence in Sápmi” – a film that provided important stories about violence against Sami women.

Invited to the panel was Ellacarin Blind, member in the organization Amnesty Sápmi and member of the Another Development Foundation Advisory Group, and Ingvar Rönnbäck, founder and chair of the board of Another Development Foundation.

A number of issues were discussed, highlighting the specific challenges for Sami women and other women in indigenous groups, rooted in colonialism, patriarchy and misogyni. The conversation also refered to research on violence against Sami women and on what needs to be done to support women, families and communities, as well as on violence prevention.

Organizers of this event were the study association Bilda, the Västerbotten Centre for Human Rights (Rättighetscentrum Västerbotten), Film in Västerbotten, the People´s Cinema (Folkets Bio) and the County Administrative Board in Västerbotten.

Another Development Foundation is grateful for being invited to this important conversation, trying to break the silence on the violence against Sami women and against women in indigenous groups.
