To: the people of the European Union countries, leaders of the European Union, and heads of States
A World BEYOND War Europe Appeal for De-escalation, Conflict Resolution, Civil Rights, and Peacebuilding at a Critical Time in History
This is a World BEYOND War European Appeal, signed by European Affiliates and Chapters. In light of the current ongoing emergencies, we ask EU leaders and all people living in Europe to support the de-escalation and just resolution of European and international conflicts, full respect for civil rights, and promotion of peace-building in Europe.
While the people of Europe have experienced numerous wars throughout history, two world wars and countless armed conflicts, political violence, genocide, and racism, Europe has also seen institutional and social development, regional cooperation, and regional integration. In light of this history, this statement calls for EU citizens and leaders to work together to bring about lasting, peaceful security for all including those fleeing war and violence and seeking refuge from climate disasters. It is indeed undeniably a perilous time for humanity, which we urgently need to react to.
World BEYOND War provides a global platform for the expansion of nonviolent strategies with partners who share an interest in sustainable peace based on respect for fundamental human rights, common security, and the rule of law.
We ask that the EU leaders and heads of States:
- Support and develop an international system that takes into account equality between peoples and nations, mutual security for all countries and societies, respect for fundamental human rights as a common global norm, as well as fully supporting the international legal institutions, such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and International Criminal Court (ICC);
- Implement the international treaties on nuclear arms and take all action necessary to reduce conflict escalation to nuclear war;
- Act for disarmament and for reducing the influence of the commercial arms industry. This should be carried out with meaningful participation by civil society;
- Uphold the right to be a pacifist and a conscientious objector, even in time of war, as enshrined in European and international human rights treaties and legislation;
- Support and act with all available means to slow ongoing climate change and regulate in law amongst the EU members to ensure sustainability in the short- and long-term. This includes prevention of conflicts resulting from the exploitation of natural resources;
- Take immediate nonviolent action for the de-escalation of the ongoing war in Ukraine, as leaders have a key responsibility to ensure peace in Europe, advocate every country’s right to sovereignty and their own territory, and keep peaceful relations with the countries of the world;
- Take action to end the war crimes, crimes against humanity, and potential genocide committed against the Palestinian, Sudanese, and Congolese peoples, among other atrocities, and promote fundamental human rights and sustainable development in other parts of the world;
- Use the current crisis in Ukraine to explore ways in which a world beyond war could really be achieved since our very survival depends on our ability and political will to move from the single-minded investment in MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction), to a vision of common, mutual security founded on the recognition that we share the same fundamental needs and aspirations and which our governments and leaders are legally and morally bound to recognise and protect.
- Let the EU establish a position free from the US/Russian duality, to act as a neutral counterpart working for peace, de-escalation, and disarmament.
We ask all citizens/people of Europe:
- To consolidate civil resistance;
- To mobilize using nonviolent methods to resist the militarisation of our societies and the decline of democracy itself.
In conclusion, we need to use our freedom of speech and action to support our fundamental right to live in peaceful security, as outlined in the UN Charter.
We express our solidarity with all those who are deprived of the freedom of peacefully opposing war and war preparations, as well as all forms of state-inflicted aggression.
As the WBW Europe network, we call on all those living on our continent to join in our peace-building work and to participate in the democratisation and demilitarisation of our society.
